Joe Tiller: Morgan Burke Isn’t a Football Guy

For those of you in the Indy area, you may be aware of a drive time radio program hosted by Derek Schultz and a guy Schultz has to carry on his back every day. One of their features is a “Catching Up With…” segment where they… uh… catch up with someone from Indiana sports lore. Two weeks ago, they spent some time with Joe Tiller. When asked about his most talented team, most Purdue fans might expect it to be the Brees-led 2000 team, but Tiller said 2003. That was a nine-win group that had tons of NFL players, with many on the defensive side of the ball.

Tiller was also asked about how he gets along and got along with Morgan Burke. A sampling of his response:

Morgan and I, we get along….. fine. My single biggest criticism of Morgan…is that he wasn’t a football guy. He didn’t have the skills or the background or the knowledge to evaluate what was going on in the football program.”

Tiller also said that Morgan spoke out more – presumably in a way that Tiller felt showed this lack of knowledge – once he (Tiller) had left and Danny Hope was in charge. Well, sure, Joe, many of us spoke out about the program under Hope’s stewardship.
