Do you like what we do here? What’s it worth to you? A nickel? Then here’s what I ask: Consider donating that nickel to a cause that is very near and dear to my heart – the school and hospital that my brother has been a resident of for over 35 years. This year’s walk is this coming Sunday, May 31 (though you of course can donate after that date as well). In past years, I’ve regaled you with stories of my family, my brother, the charity event we participate in and the overall good that his home does for people similarly afflicted. If you have a moment to go back and take a look at one of those stories, please do. Then feel appropriately guilted and donate your paycheck. Or a nickel. Or $10. Or $100. I don’t care.

I appreciate you reading and considering my brother’s cause. These days, we save umbilical cord blood and tissue and some previously incurable ailments have been improved – who knows what would have happened if such technology existed in 1971 when my brother was born. For people like him, all we can do now is help ensure his quality of life is as good as it can be. At places like Matheny, that quality is high.
