A Drew Brees Record Falls

One record that looked like it might be hard to top was Drew Brees pass attempts record of 83, set in 1998. On Oct 10 of that year, Drew went 55/83 for 494 yards and two TDs in a 31-24 loss to Wisconsin.

Saturday night, Washington State's Connor Halliday broke it while playing in Mike Leach's offense, which describing as "pass-happy" doesn't quite do justice (perhaps "pass-ecstatic" works better?).

Halliday went 58/89 for 557 yards and four TDs (to go with four picks) in a blowout loss to Oregon.

It got a bit obscured by Oregon's defensive coordinator calling Leach and the Cougars "low class" for continuning to pass during the fourth quarter of a blowout.

Yes, that's right -- Oregon was somehow offended (or at least one coach was) that a team that was down big in an American football contest, elected to throw the ball a ton rather than just run out the clock. I guess when you're in Eugene, you're just supposed to bow down to the Ducklings and take your beating like a good, subservient conference foe.

Mike Leach may well be a jerk -- he sure comes off that way at times. But to accuse a team of being low class because of them continuing to play the game is beyond preposterous. It's just another example of our always-offended culture, where there are more unwritten rules than written rules and everybody has their own intrerpretation of who is and is not "disrespecting" the game.

Just shut up everyone. Play the game however you want as long as you're not dirty.
